Bisy Backson (My Response to the Tao of Pooh)

By Becca Jones

I LOVED reading the Tao of Pooh. I've always loved Winnie the Pooh. Now, after reading the Tao I have even more appreciation for this simple bear and the lessons I can learn from him. The character that stood out to me the most in the Tao was the "bisy backson". I so often feel BUSY in life. I think as a young mom it's completely normal to be very busy. The busy that I don't like, however, is the busy that at the end of the day when I'm reflecting on my day leaves me feeling empty and like I haven't accomplished anything of importance. The "chronic Backson always seems to have to be going somewhere, at least on a superficial, physical level" (pg 96). This is what leaves me feeling empty. When I fill my date with endless minutia of "stuff" that isn't linked to my core values or my purpose in life I feel like I've run around doing nothing. And I have. I get very distracted by what I feel I should be doing or with trying to keep up with others. Life can be so easily filled with things that do not fill us up. I can easily fill mine with magazines, facebook, pinterest, endless crafts, etc. I think my days would take on more meaning if I would take some time to breath, to focus, and to decide what is MOST important to me and to fill my time accordingly. It's not so important to be busy. Just being busy in and of itself accomplishes nothing. I need to be "anxiously engaged in a good cause". I need to remember that my children are what 'God has given me time for'.

It is a difficult thing to balance the needs of the home, the needs of my children, and my needs especially when I feel like the world is shouting "YOU AREN'T DOING ANYTHING!" I feel that I will be better able to tune out the inner voice that tells me I'm not doing enough when I can figure out what exactly I want to be doing. I need to find an anchor and balance and structure my life around that.
